The Emirates Stadium
Arsenal moved the short distance from Highbury to the Emirates in 2006, ending a stay of more than ninety years at a ground hemmed in by terraced streets and incapable of growing. The club itself started further away than most supporters realise: it was founded in 1886 by workers at the armament factory in Woolwich, in south-east London, and only crossed the river to north London in 1913.
Two of the stand names came with them. The North Bank and the Clock End carry over from Highbury, alongside the East and West Stands. Arsenal station on the Piccadilly line is a few minutes’ walk away, with Finsbury Park and Highbury & Islington a little further out and usually less crowded after the final whistle.
