Founded in 1889, Brentford are nicknamed the Bees, a name that arrived by accident in the 1890s when students chanting “buck up Bs” for a player were misheard by the press as “buck up bees”.
The club spent most of the post-war era outside the top flight. Griffin Park, their home from 1904 to 2020, became famous as the only English league ground with a pub on each of its four corners, and held a record crowd of 38,678 for an FA Cup tie in 1949. Promotion through the 2021 Championship play-off final returned Brentford to the top division for the first time since 1946/47, ending an absence of 74 years.
