The Weeknd is the stage name of Canadian singer-songwriter Abel Makkonen Tesfaye. Tesfaye started uploading music anonymously in 2009, releasing three mixtapes (House of Balloons, Thursday, and Echoes of Silence) in 2011, which gained him a following for his alternative R&B sound. He signed with Republic Records in 2012 and achieved massive commercial success with his 2015 album Beauty Behind the Madness, which included the hit singles “The Hills” and “Can’t Feel My Face”. His other major works include the albums Starboy (2016), After Hours (2020) which featured the hit “Blinding Lights,” and Dawn FM (2022). His music is known for blending alternative R&B with pop, dance, and electronic music, often exploring themes of love, sex, and drugs. His sound has been described as influential, and he has a unique vocal range. He has collaborated with numerous artists, including Kendrick Lamar, Ariana Grande, and Drake. In 2021, he headlined the Super Bowl halftime show.
